www.encognitive.com Health dangers of gmo foods The Dangers of GM (Genetically modified) foods This segment of health buzz is about GMO (genetically modified organisms), or GM foods. Below are some headlines, which we’ll discuss in detail. –Health Fears Over Secret Study in GM Food –Monsanto’s GE Corn Experiments on Rats Continue to Generate Global Controversy –GM New Study Shows Unborn Babies Could Be Harmed –New Suspicions About GMOs — Monsanto’s GMO Corn Linked To Organ Failure, Study Reveals — GM crops cause liver and kidney damage –270000 organic farmers sue Monsanto Several recent studies confirm fears that genetically modified (GM) foods damage human health. These studies were released as the World Trade Organization (WTO) moved toward upholding the ruling that the European Union has violated international trade rules by stopping importation of GM foods. Research by the Russian Academy of Sciences released in December 2005 found that more than half of the offspring of rats fed GM soy died within the first three weeks of life, six times as many as those born to mothers fed on non-modified soy. Six times as many offspring fed GM soy were also severely underweight. In November 2005, a private research institute in Australia, CSIRO Plant Industry, put a halt to further development of a GM pea cultivator when it was found to cause an immune response in laboratory mice. In the summer of 2005, an Italian research team led by a cellular biologist at the University

www.emfnews.org www.emfnews.org www.emfnews.org – www.emfnews.org By Steven Reinberg HealthDay Reporter FRIDAY, June 10 (HealthDay News) — The debate over whether or not cell phones might cause brain tumors continues, as a new international study finds a small risk among people who are heavy cell phone users or who have used them for a long time. Dr. Otis Brawley, chief medical officer of the American Cancer Society, was not involved with the latest research, but said that “the study is not conclusive that cell phones cause brain tumors.” The study shows a correlation between cell phone use and the risk of brain tumors, Brawley said. “But this is a suggestion, it is by no means definitive,” he said. Brawley noted there is an ongoing study bombarding the brains of mice with radio frequency radiation to see if brain tumors develop. “If that study is positive, that’s going to really tell us that cell phones are not good. If that study is negative, the debate will continue,” he said. The latest report was published in the June 10 online edition of Occupational and Environmental Medicine. Recently, the World Health Organization (WHO) added cell phones to its list of things that might cause cancer. WHO said cell phones are “possibly carcinogenic to humans” and placed them in the same category as the pesticide DDT and gasoline engine exhaust. www.emfnews.org www.emfnews.org www.emfnews.org

www.emfnews.org www.emfnews.org www.emfnews.org Just about everyone of us out there owns a cell phone. Now a days we wouldn’t know what to do without one. They are very convenient, you want to make a call just simply reach into your purse or pocket, reach across and grab it off of the passenger seat of your car and start dialing. No more looking for a pay phone and the correct change you need to make a call. You can also send text messages to anyone around the world, as long as they have a cell phone or a computer. Cell phone users have become known as the thumb generation. But, with the invention of the cell phone, has come many dangers. The National Safety Council estimates 28 percent of all traffic accidents are due to distracted drivers using cell phones. This has lead to a few states to pass a law to band cell phone use while driving. If you drive, there is no doubt you see the distractions of other drivers when they are on their cell phones. Can’t keep a consistent speed, don’t look before pulling out or making a lane change among many others. There is no phone call that is so important that you should risk your own life along with the lives of others. When your driving and your phone rings, find a safe place to pull over and take the call. The best thing to do would be to turn it off until you have reached your destination. Now the latest health risk is you could possibly develop tinnitus-a chronic ringing in the ears. This appears to be increased with ongoing

www.emfnews.org www.emfnews.org www.emfnews.org Last year, a well-circulated Swedish study found that people using cell phones doubled their risk of developing brain cancer and acoustic neuroma (a tumor that damages your hearing nerve). The study also showed that people who started using cell phones before the age of 20 were more than five times as likely to develop brain cancer. The European Parliament responded by voting 522 to 16 to urge ministers across Europe to impose stricter limits for exposure to radiation from mobile and cordless phones, wi-fi and other radiation-generating devices — in part because children are particularly vulnerable to the risk. Dr. Gerd Oberfeld, MD, the Speaker for Environmental Medicine for the Austrian Medical Association in Vienna, Austria says: “The scientific data show, with a high degree of confidence, that mobile phone exposure is associated with an increased brain tumor risk. The age group below 20 years is facing the greatest risk, which for malignant (deadly) brain tumors is about 400 percent, compared to non-exposed. When we take the long latency period of up to some decades into account, and the fact that large parts of our society, and especially more and more teenagers and even children are using mobile phones on a daily basis, we may well expect a brain tumor epidemic. www.emfnews.org www.emfnews.org www.emfnews.org

Mary Larson was one of the earlier pioneers to crusade against uncontrolled pesticide use in the human environment. Her daughter was exposed to DDT at age 10 at summer camp and became allergic to all chemicals. Mary cared for daughter’s health which led her life work against pesticides. She became the first recipient of Carleton Lee Award for Environmental Medicine. Her victory was banning DDT. She lobbied for the first city law to display signs when pesticides were used. She worked for Dr Theron Randolf, she testified in congress, and her library is in an eastern college. She started one of the very first organic community gardens putting her on the cover of the national AT&T employee’s magazine decades ago. Her daughter died on Earth Day. Her nephew Ted Larson wrote this song for Kathy and Mary. Lead vocals by JoAnne Avery Neish, and performed by Damascus Road. www.aaemonline.org
